Motivation, What's Your "Why?"
Aaron Moorefield
Why are you in college? That’s a question that too often college students don’t ask themselves. The answer to this question is slightly different for each individual, but each answer has an overarching theme: reaching full potential. In life, you get out of it what you put into it. Everyone’s heard the saying, “hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”, meaning if someone that’s talented loses to someone less talented it is due to a lack of motivation. The only person that can control how hard you work for success is you. With all that being said, everyone comes from a different background and each person’s motivation and will to succeed is for a different reason. This article is not meant to be a cheesy “how to stay motivated on mundane Mondays” type of article. This article is a reality check. Seriously think about who you are and where you come from, and ask yourself the simple question, “Why am I in college?” The value added by taking this time out of your life is incalculable, but I can assure you your future self will thank you.
Personally, I am in college for several reasons. I view college as an opportunity to set myself apart from people based on my education. I believe that achieving my degree will place me on a platform that I can use to springboard myself to a successful and lucrative professional career. I also see being at a school, like Towson University, as an incredible networking opportunity. The reason I am a founding member of The Real Estate Club @ TU is to surround myself with a positive group of like-minded individuals, and I have no doubt that I will be making money in the future with a select few of these people. Already I have been presented with several opportunities to advance my career through internships because of networking, so I highly recommend finding a group like The Real Estate Club if you have not already done so. Lastly, and most important to me, I am in college to begin a legacy for my future children to be proud to hold. The focus while in college should be on one’s future, and I’ve simply shared my personal experience to give an example of what it’s like to truly self-reflect on the reasons you may be in school today.
I believe this self-reflection will be 1000 times more helpful than a cliché motivational tips article, and I wish each and every person that reads this article the best of luck in life and their ventures.
