What you didn't know about your professors
Deborah Odagbodo
Recently I connected with an
alumnus of Towson University. We started talking about my career options and
eventually we ended up discussing the professors that I currently had for class
this term. We shared a common professor. He began to tell me about all the
accomplishments of this professor and how popular he is in the industry. When I
returned to the campus I went to the professor’s office hours and we had a very
informative conversation that opened my eyes to a new career path I had not
previously considered.
As students, we often fail to realize how valuable our professor are. More than 79 percent of Towson University's full-time, permanent faculty members have earned the highest degree of academic preparation expected for their fields of specialization. Whether you are a freshman or a graduating senior it is not too early or late to begin to connect with your instructors/professors. Below are some things you may have not considered about your professors.
-Professors know people who work in your chosen major. A lot of professors attend meetings, conferences and/or are a part of industry specific organizations. This exposure allows for them to build a strong network. Those network connections might reach out to them if they have opportunities and are looking for students.
-Professors could write letters of recommendation. For those applying to graduate school, sending in scholarship applications or trying to land their dream job, professors could be a great reference! They know what the readers are looking for and will tailor their writing to the right audience
-Professors are frequently asked to recommend students for special awards. If they do not know you then they cannot recommend you. Asking questions and visiting office hours could help you get noticed and in the long run pay off.
-Professors know the various career paths in your field. Professors could help you understand the potential and possibilities you have once you graduate. Professors could help you put things into perspective and offer the necessary encouragement you need to make it through the rough patches.
-If you are a little hesitant about how valuable your professors could be remember, professors are interesting people. It takes an interesting person to be willing to teach and help build the next generation, but they could only help if you allow them.
All the professors in the College of Business and Economics are more than willing to help guide students to success. As students, we must remember to maximize them as a resource while we still can.
