TOWSON EMPOWERING STUDENT ENTREPRENEURS WITH LAUNCHPAD
Sandrine Emambu
Remember when you were five years old and you dreamed about being the President, an astronaut, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, or simply your own boss? Well, the reality is, not all of those dreams can come true. However, as a Towson student, your dream of being an entrepreneur might just become a reality. Throughout our university, professors and students alike have shared the sentiment that students aspire to someday own their business. But some may lack the mentorship and the resources needed to make their ideas come alive. Some might think that being an entrepreneur requires a person to be a part of the business school. However, what about the art student who would love to own their own studio, or the computer science major who dreams of owning a technology company, or the accounting major who aspires to open a firm, or the psychology major with the goal of owning their own practice someday? TowsonGlobal and other faculty members and staff at Towson University came together on February 5th to address the need for a Launchpad to help TU students turn their ideas into successful business ventures.
The Student Entrepreneurial Launchpad is an incubator designed for students with an interest in entrepreneurship and starting their own business. It will aid students with the creation of their business plans, connect them to larger networks of entrepreneurs in the business community, and expose them to the entrepreneurial environment. The concept of a Student Entrepreneurial Launchpad began at the University of Miami in 2008 and has been adopted by several other universities such as Princeton, University of California, Berkley, and now here at Towson University. The goal of the TU Launchpad is to enrich every student’s education by developing an infrastructure that encourages an entrepreneurial experience for students at Towson. Towson University not only becomes a place where every student receives a degree, but a place where they can receive both a degree and a successful business venture. |
Because this initiative is in its early stages, student voices can definitely help in shaping what this incubator will look like and what it will offer. So we want to hear if you think this is a good or bad investment for Towson University to make. Please complete the brief survey below and tell us what you think! All feedback is greatly appreciated. The Student Entrepreneurial Launchpad is scheduled for release by early January 2015.
