What are Employers Looking for in Recent Graduates?
Ashley Kitzmiller
In recent years, numerous sources have confirmed that the majority of employers are looking for recent graduates with internships, extracurricular activities, volunteer experience, etc. It is no longer just about GPA, but rather the connections that you make with individuals and professionals that help make securing a job after college that much easier. Examples of college involvement include:
- Internships
- College and National Level Clubs/Organizations
- Sports Teams
- Study Abroad/Internships Abroad
- Volunteer Experiences
Internships are on the top of the list for what employers are looking for in recent graduates, and the more you have the better. While several students are required to have an internship in order to graduate, it is most beneficial to search for an internship similar to your career aspirations. An internship will only be as beneficial as what you put into it. Going to work each day and just doing homework will probably not land you a job upon graduation. However, being proactive and having the eagerness to learn at your internship will result in excellent recommendations, connections, and possibly a future job at that company.
Students that have studied abroad at Towson always have wonderful things to say. However, several students have not taken advantage of the internships abroad that Towson offers. For example, students can complete an internship abroad through Towson's summer program in Dublin where they place you in an internship related to your area of interest. This is something very unique to look into as a CBE student because less than 1% of students complete an internship abroad, and it will stand out to employers. |
It is highly recommended that every student become a member of at least one club/organization. Within the College of Business and Economics alone we have 18 clubs/organizations to choose from. While just becoming a member and showing up to the meetings will help make connections, the real resume builder is becoming a member of the executive board. This will enhance your leadership and teamwork skills, and could lead to becoming a member of the club's National Chapter.
