NEXT STEP FOR GRADUATING SENIORS
ALEXANDRA GUIMARAES
The College
of Business and Economics here at Towson University has prepared us to be
successful young business men and women, through a strong curriculum, a
supporting staff and outstanding knowledgeable faculty. It won’t be easy for
any of us to leave behind the walls of Stephens Hall this December. But even
though we will always cherish the great and exiting times we had during our
college years, we have greater things ahead of us. This is just the beginning. Here
are some next step suggestions for all out 2014-2025 graduates:
· Take a step back, and be proud of what you have accomplished. Regardless of whether you have or haven’t started looking for a job for next year, take a minute, day or week, out of the craziness, and step back and reminisce on what you have achieved. After four years of hard work, you have earned not only a diploma, but experiences, friends and connections that will always be with you.
· During your job search, do not give up, but more importantly do not settle. By now, through the courses and resources at CBE, you have all the tools necessary to succeed on the job search. Begin, or continue, applying for jobs, landing interviews and impressing potential employers until you are successful, but keep in mind you will be doing this 8+ hours a week, so do not settle for the first offer that comes your way if your gut tells you it’s not a right match. If it is, more power to you!
· Start your savings account as soon as you are settled. It is never too soon to start saving for a rainy day. Keeping a savings account will not only help you develop discipline, but will also give you some confidence and assurance to fall back on.
· Network. Connections, networking and building strong relationships is essential not only for your career as a business person, but as a human. Get out there and network with people that share your interests, aspirations and goals. Attend assemblies, forums, panels, fairs, and any event that sparks your interest. That could help you improve your skills. Growing your network will enable you to meet the right people at the right time and could help advance your career faster.
· Never burn bridges with people that cross your path. You never know. One day that person could have an influence on a major event in your life, and you want to be able to feel satisfied with the impression they have of you.
I hope these tips were helpful to you, and that they provide a clear view of what’s to come. Again, congratulations graduating seniors! It has been a pleasure writing for all of you, and I wish you luck on all your future endeavors.
